Last week we discussed the transition from Apostles to Elders in the early church. Scripture makes it clear that the work of Elders is important to the cause to Christ. Here are some.
Paul says Elders are to "rule well" (1 Tim. 5:17). Elders are also called Bishops, a word meaning overseer. So, Elders oversee the entire work of the congregation. If they do well, they entire congregation prospers. But if they do poorly, the congregation suffers.
Heb. 13:7 adds to rule by adding their faith should be worth of following. A strong church must have men of great faith leading it forward or it will suffer. If Elders are not men of faith, how can they expect the church to keep moving?
Heb. 13:17 adds to rule by saying they "watch out for your souls". This is the most weighty duty o Elders. They are trying to keep each one in the church saved. This requires effort, but the results are worth it.
