Paul gives a bleak description of people without Christ in Eph. 2:12. "That at that time you were without Christ, being aliens from the common wealth of Israel and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world." Three things really stand out in this scripture.
First, lost people are without Christ. Because Chris is Savior (2 Tim. 1:10), lost people are not saved. Only saved people will go to Heaven, so this is a dangerous condition in which to live.
Second, lost people are living without hope. They are living for today with little concern for their future. This life is brief; eternity is not.
Third, lost people do not have God. They are directing the course of their lives and that is taking them wrong direction. Yet, while they live without God, if they become desperate, they might call on Him.
Paul continues in the next Scriptures to offer a solution. We can come to God in Christ!
