This past week we got a good lesson on forgiveness, as the younger brother of a man murdered in his own apartment by an off-duty cop, hugged the woman and said he forgave her. Sometimes we debate when a Christian can offer forgiveness, but this even reveals the true nature of forgiveness. The Christian forgives because Jesus forgave His murderers. Forgiveness, from a human view point, arises from within, as the Christian releases himself from hurt and bitterness by another. Forgiveness is for us, as we release ourselves from the past.
By the way, if you believe your hurt is too great to forgive, remember the words of Jesus, "But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses" (Mt. 6:15). When we stop forgiving others, God stops forgiving us. I don't think any of can afford that.
