Throughout the New Testament, the admonition to remember the poor is there. We see this several times in the book of Acts, which is normally considered a book of evangelism and conversion. To say the east, the subject was important in the first century. Some would ask why.
First, there was no form of governmental help for the poor. If you could not work, you would not eat. If you died, it was just one less poor person to deal with.
Second, the rich separated themselves from the poor, and tried to have as little contact as possible. As a result, most rich people never saw a poor person.
Therefore, the poor were on their own, and could expect little help. So it became important to Christ and the early church to help.
Our question is, is it important to help the poor today? As long as people need help, God's people should try to respond.
